I have been Type 1 Diabetic since 13th Friday February 1976. Not that the date is embossed in my brain, but I can even remember what I had to eat that day before I left for the hospital. (Fish & Chips in Dingles. Plymouth with a coke I bet it wasnt Diet back then either lol). My mum said it was probably the last time I was allowed to eat such things, How wrong she was, LOL....
I was admitted into Scott Hospital Ward 3 on that date and never been so scared in all my life. This is my 41st year of being Diabetic and hey things have changed . Who can remember the different types of insulin the strengths 20,40,80 pig and ox type. Now we are on U100 types with faster acting times. I can even remember my 1st BG meter it was in a sports bag and too heavy for me to carry, it plugged into the mains and took ages to warm up, it was like a breeze block! The syringes we used were reusable with needles you cleaned out with gold thread!
Now I am on my 3rd insulin pump, (they only have a useable safe life of 4 years) lots of hard work but hey you get good results far better control and not so many puncture marks. Hopefully these will become more available as the control is so much more stable. there are so many types on the market as well! One to suit everyone...
